Debra Lykkemark accepted the award for Best Overall Catered Event for Monet’s Secret Summer Gala at this years ILEA Vancouver Gala Awards.
The Monet Secret Garden Summer Gala 2017 attracted more than 400 philanthropists and art enthusiasts to raise funds for the exhibitions, education, and public programming of the Vancouver Art Gallery and to launch a fundraising campaign for the new gallery building project. In attendance were top business leaders, collectors, artists, gallerists, socialites and cultural leaders. Celebrated artists such as Douglas Coupland, Landon MacKenzie, Howie Tsui, and Paul Wong convened for the city’s most anticipated gala. The evening featured bespoke cocktails, followed by an elegant Monet inspired hors d’oeuvre reception and dinner. Guests also enjoyed an exclusive, behind-the-scenes viewing of the installation of Monet’s works.
Monet’s vegetable garden and love of flowers was reflected in a chilled summer green vichyssoise with dungeness crab, watercress, preserved lemon, and edible flower petals. The vichyssoise offered a complex burst of flavours in a gorgeous presentation.
The entrée was roasted cornish game hen with tarragon vinaigrette, cauliflower purée, pea shoots, organic carrots, haricot vert, fennel and navet. The entrée paid tribute to the artist’s farm-to-fork philosophy and the tiny birds made a stunning presentation on the table.
Monet’s favourite dessert was ice cream, so we proposed a frozen berry parfait, a perfect tribute to the fruits of summer. The parfait was visually striking with fresh berries providing brilliant colour and arranged on the plate much like the cherished flowerbeds the artist loved to paint.
